Virgil Hurt - Pastor

Virgil came to Lynchburg from Moscow, Idaho where he studied theology and pastoral ministry at Greyfriars Hall. He earned a BA in Philosophy from Idaho State University and managed Kinko’s Copy Centers in Idaho and Virginia for ten years. Originally from Twin Falls, Idaho he married his fifth grade sweetheart , Katie, and has six children: Rebecca Esmond (married to Simon), Elizabeth Lamont (married to Ian), Zachary (married to Olivia), Anna Landon (married to Tristan), Leah, and Calvin. Virgil and Katie welcomed their first grandchild in November 2016. Virgil served as a deacon and elder at Christ Church, Moscow, Idaho from 1995-2000 and has served as Providence Church’s pastor since its founding in December of 2000.

Rick Davis - Associate Pastor

Rick and his wife Mary Beth both grew up in Craig County, VA. In 2004, Rick graduated from Liberty University with a BA in Biblical Studies. He has been a teacher for Veritas Scholars Academy since 2008. He became a deacon at Providence Church in 2008 and an elder in 2018. Rick has been the Associate Pastor at Providence Church since November 2020, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity through the Blue Ridge Institute for Theological Education. Rick and Mary Beth have three children: Luther, Anthea, and Alfred.


Jody Simmons - Assistant Pastor

Jody’s roots are in Corpus Christi, TX where he grew up. In 2005 he graduated with an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Since then, he has pastored a church in Cherokee, TX, spent a year and a half as a missionary in India, and served as Associate Pastor of River Hills Baptist Church in Corpus Christi from 2013-2022. He became an Assistant Pastor at Providence Church in February 2023. Jody and his wife Katherine have three children: Porter, Caleb, and Anna Kate.

David Cooper - Elder

David hails from Port Townsend, WA and is a graduate of Liberty University where he studied history, philosophy, and literature. David and his wife Meg have seven children and stay busy gardening and bringing their house, built in 1850, to its antebellum glory. He enjoys reading, soccer (Go Gooners!), and working as a financial adviser to families in Central VA. David has been an elder since October 2007.

Kyle Harris - Elder

Kyle grew up in the farm town of Sunnyside, WA and moved to Lynchburg to attend Liberty University where he studied biology, chemistry, and religion. He has gone on to earn two Masters and a Doctorate. While at Liberty, he met his wife, Toni. He has five children and lives in Forest, VA. Dr. Harris teaches at his alma mater as an Assistant Professor of Biology. Kyle loves creepy crawly animals, painting, and camping. He served as a deacon at Providence Church from 2004 until 2013, when he was ordained an elder.

Dan Tuckwiller - Elder

Daniel came to Lynchburg from Stafford, VA to attend Liberty University. He graduated with a degree in accounting and has been crunching numbers and advising medical practices for HCI-EBS ever since. He is married to Megan and the father of seven. Daniel roots for the Redskins through thick and thin (mostly thin).

Nathan Akers - Deacon

Nathan and Whitney Akers have attended Providence Church since 2016. Prior to that they lived in Hampton Roads and Upstate NY attending the CREC churches in those locations. With their four children they love living and working here in the Lynchburg area. Nathan works as a mechanical engineer and spends his free time walking and playing with the kids and working on projects around the house. Nathan has been a deacon at Providence Church since 2020.


Drew Bonner - Deacon

Drew and Sarah Bonner have been members of Providence Church since 2018. Drew works for Nolan Real Estate, helping put roofs over people’s heads (by selling them houses). He and his wife, Sarah, have three children. He has been a deacon at Providence since 2022.

Tim Fletcher - Deacon

Tim is a jack of all trades; the true renaissance man. Does your circa 1900 home have a door ringer giving you trouble? Do you need nunchackus suitable for 7 year old boys to whack each other? Perhaps you merely want to discuss the application of mathematics in the natural world? In all these things, Tim is the man you’re looking for. While in college, Tim boarded with the founder of Providence Church, Gordon Wilson. After graduating and walking the full 2,160 miles of the Appalachian Trail on his two feet, Tim married Janet and settled down in Lynchburg. Together they have three children. Tim was ordained a deacon in May 2014.

Chris Waugh - Deacon

Chris has lived a life of service; serving his country through three tours in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne, and his local community as a law enforcement officer. Originally from Maine, he found his way to Lynchburg in a roundabout way only the military can provide. He is married to Jennifer and they have three children, one in heaven. Chris has a BS in Biblical & Theological Studies from Liberty University. He loves the Boston Red Sox and talking baseball, studying theology and history, and a good wrist lock. Chris has served as a deacon at Providence Church since 2017.
